Microsoft raising Xbox Live membership prices

Love playing your Xbox 360 games online? Join the crew…and please have your credit card handy, because Microsoft would like to have a word with it.

Specifically, the word “more.”

Xbox Live

On Monday, the company announced plans to raise the price of the Xbox Live Gold membership, making it the online network’s first fee hike in its eight-year history. Beginning November 1, gamers in the U.S., Canada, Mexico and the U.K. will have to fork over at least $10 extra per year to enjoy the premium service, which is required for playing games with (or against) pals online.

In the U.S., the annual subscription plan — once $49.99, soon to be $59.99 — will remain far and way the most economical. The monthly plan will see a $2 bump ($9.99/month, or $120/year), while the three-month plan will jump $5 ($24.99/month, or $100/year).

Why the sudden hike? To Xbox Live spokesman Major Nelson, someone has to pay for all the stuff they keep adding to the network, right?

“Since launching Xbox LIVE in 2002 we have continually added more content and entertainment experiences for our members, while keeping the price the same,” he said. “We’re confident that when the new pricing takes effect, an Xbox LIVE Gold membership will continue to offer the best value in the industry.”

Well, that’s one way to look at it. Another way to look at it is that Microsoft remains the only one of the big three console makers to charge a fee for online play. While Sony’s recently-released “Playstation Plus” upgrade gives gamers access to premium content, playing games online is still entirely free for all users. And though the Wii has lagged behind in the online gaming field, the relatively few games that support online play don’t cost players extra.

But with blockbuster multiplayer games like Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 selling like hotcakes on the 360, Microsoft hasn’t had a hard time convincing users to pay up. According to Bloomberg, a good 25 million Xbox 360 owners went Gold in the last fiscal year, netting the company about $600 million in fees alone and accounting for roughly half of Microsoft’s estimated $1.2 billion in revenue via the online service. With the Xbox 360 topping charts in July and surefire seller Halo: Reach arriving September 14th, the company might need to buy a bigger wallet.

It’s not all doom and gloom for 360 gamers, however. In a half-hearted attempt to make amends for the rate increase, Microsoft is letting current U.S. Xbox Live Gold members lock in one more year of membership for $39.99, a $20 premium over the coming price. Not bad, but an even thriftier move is to snap up a few discounted pre-paid cards at online retailers like Amazon. Redeem one now, then save one for next year to renew at the discounted price again. Sneaky…and sure to vanish quickly, so hop to it.

PlayStation®Network Maintenance

Hi everyone,

Just wanted to pass on some news to you PlayStation Network users.

On Monday August 30th PlayStation Network will be undergoing maintenance. This is scheduled to happen between 3am [EST] and 4pm [EST].

During this maintenance period you will be unable to access the PlayStation Store or Account Management.

PSP to Focus on Younger Audience, says Sony

SCEE president Andrew House admits that development and consistency of title releases for the PSP could have been better, but it is high time that development focus turns towards a younger audience, one that enjoys immersive mobile gaming experiences. Of course, Nintendo has had a monopoly on handheld gaming for many years by focusing largely on a younger demographic.

“I think the overall consistency and flow of titles could have been better over the years. Whether that’s an issue of perceived developer support or portfolio management, said House. “Having said that, last year we had arguably the best line-up of PSP titles that we’ve seen. Five years in, we’re entering a fairly mature point in its lifecycle – and a portable lifecycle is clearly a different dynamic to the one in the home.”

The key, therefore, is to dedicate time to an audience that plays mobile games. “What is now a key emphasis for us is focusing on a younger audience who are the prime audience for a dedicated gaming device with deeper, more immersive content: they may have less disposable income, but they’ve got more time to play,” said House.

“We’re looking to mine that content library which we’ve assembled over the last few years and restructure the value-proposition. [The budget Essentials range] in its first couple of months since launch has been a phenomenal success on two fronts – not just in actual sales, but the uptake there has been on overall PSP software which has seen a knock-on effect.”

“I would argue that we’re starting to see what we originally intended – that it’s helping to breathe life into sales of the hardware as well.”

160GB PlayStation 3 confirmed, on sale at Amazon

The news is out — Amazon now has the 160GB PlayStation 3 listed for $299.99. Now with the release of this news from Sony’s GamesCom press conference — the best part is now we get to tell you all about it.

160GB PlayStation 3 confirmed, on sale at Amazon

Actually, there’s not much to tell at the moment. The 160GB model is apparently on sale now on Amazon. A second new 320GB PS3 was announced at the press conference, but we’re not seeing any retail listings for it yet.

Don’t forget there’s also a Move Starter Kit PS3 bundle on the way for $399.99 with a rumored cheaper version at $350.

ETA: The announcements out of Playstation blog about these PS3 models should be available this Fall acording to the Playstation blog.

UPDATE: Pricing details have just been released on the official US Playstation Blog. According to the blog, they will be introducing two new models of the PS3 system– a 320GB PS3 system, which will be included in the PS3 Sports Champions Move bundle; as well as a 160GB PS3 system, which will be available as a standalone. These new higher capacity models will continue to offer the same advanced features and functions of the current models, but with approximately 33 percent more capacity and at compelling price points.

160GB model will retail at $299.99, and is said to be shipping to retailers today. The 320 GB unit, which is set to hit store shelves on September 19, will be part of the Sports Champions Move bundle, which will also include a PlayStation Move, a PlayStation Eye, a copy of Sports Champions, and a Blu-ray demo disc, all for $399.99.

The 320GB PS3 system will hit store shelves on September 19, in conjunction with the launch of PlayStation Move. It will be part of the PS3 Sports Champions Move bundle, which includes one PlayStation Move motion controller, PlayStation Eye camera, a copy of Sports Champions on Blu-ray disc, and bonus Blu-ray game demo disc– all in one complete package for $399.99 (MSRP). The value included in this bundle is incredible and we know this will further add to the exceptionally high demand for the new platform.

PlayStation 3 - 320GB Move Bundle

These new, larger hard drives mean more room for storing all the great content that PlayStation offers: thousands of games, movies, TV shows, as well as your personal photos, videos, music and so much more. There’s never been a more convenient, cost effective way to join the PlayStation family and bring the future of entertainment into your living room.

Ghost Recon games announced for Wii, PSP

Just a quick note for you Tom Clancy fans. Ubisoft announced two new games in the Ghost Recon series for Wii and PSP that bring a “true” Ghost Recon experience to each platform through “sophisticated technology, weaponry, graphics, and challenging gameplay.”

The first, simply titled Ghost Recon, puts Wii players in the shoes of Ghost soldiers Hibbard and Booth — two operatives stranded in Moscow after getting separated from their team. The game offers 12 missions, drop-in/drop-out co-op mode (in the third person), and an Arcade mode where players can compare scores on leaderboards.

The second, Ghost Recon: Predator, gives players a squad of Ghost soldiers that have 72 hours to prep for an invasion in Sri Lanka. The press release lists gameplay features as “an exclusive tactical experience,” “electronic warfare,” and multiplayer co-op for up to three players via ad-hoc connection.

Here, have some Predator screens:

Game Information

Set in a futuristic utopia, an elite peacekeeping force thwarts the rumblings of civil war. But deception within the ranks has caused two members of the most feared unit, Dead Echo, to strike out on their own. Now washed-up mercenaries turned space pirates, Grayson Hunt and Ishi Sato’s latest quest for a quick buck goes south. Stumbling upon their ex-commander’s warship, the Ulysses, Grayson engages this behemoth head-on. Outmanned and outgunned, his only option is to ram the Ulysses in a suicidal bid at redemption.

Narrowly surviving a crash landing and stranded on the abandoned paradise planet of Stygia, Grayson and Ishi find themselves surrounded by hordes of mutants and flesh-eating gangs. They survive on two objectives: get off the planet alive and exact revenge on the man who sent them there.

Taking the role of Grayson Hunt, wield over-the-top combat moves and some of the most uniquely innovative weapons ever seen in a first-person shooter that all feed into the distinct skillshot system for unprecedented levels of frantic gameplay. Unleash the Bulletstorm™!

Features

  • Incredible new Skillshot system: Combine outrageous gunplay with unique kick, slide, and leash mechanics as you kill with skill. Every enemy presents a new opportunity for stylish, over-the-top and ever increasingly bloody ways to take them down.
  • Circle of awesome: Kill with skill to rack up the points. Cash in these points for upgrades. Use these upgrades to pull off even bigger and better skillshots and earn even more points. The upgrade system truly is a circle of awesome rewarding players who kill in the most creative ways.
  • Badass weaponry: From your trusty Peace Maker Carbine to the explosive Flail Gun, Bulletstorm delivers an arsenal of the most inventive, death-dealing weapons ever seen that truly put the fun back into the first-person shooter genre.
  • A pulp sci-fi adventure: Featuring a script by the acclaimed Marvel Comics writer Rick Remender (The Punisher), Bulletstorm takes you on a journey filled with plot twists and turns from betrayal to revenge and ultimately, redemption.
  • A dangerous planet of forgotten paradise: Travel from scorched deserts to tropical forests and an adult playground resort on a beautifully realized but defiled paradise, delivered by the power of the Unreal Engine.

1,243,733 ways to die.

Bulletstorm is the next game from the fine people at People Can Fly, if the name sounds familiar it’s because they are the team responsible for the insane and over the top Painkiller franchise. Just a shout out to all those Duke Nukem fans that were crushed by the cancellation of Duke Nukem Forever, you may take solace that everything you loved about Duke (sans the strippers) can be found in Bullestorm.

You must be asking what in the world are you talking about? How can a game about some guy on a world full of crazy gangs and killer plants be like Duke Nukem? Well how about the best one liners you’ll ever hear in your life, like this one. “You’re getting fat, because you’re eating all those bullets!”

The game is all about having fun with your kills, everything you do to end the life of some poor peon racks up more points. Your job is to combine the environment, your array of weapons and that oh so deranged imagination to create elaborate combos that will score the most points.

Let me tell you that there are a lot of options to choose from when it comes to killing. Grenade launchers that expel dual grenades tied together with a chain that can bind an enemy. A gravity whip that allows you to throw groups of enemy into the air letting them enjoy a moment of weightless floating before meeting their end, and a cornucopia of melee moves that allow you to kick, trip and slide at your enemies. See a massive cactus and think it would look fantastic with a corpse impaled on it? Then kick some unsuspecting fool into it and rack up major points.

However the amount of ways to kill your enemy isn’t limited to just letting you get the highest score per kill, the developers also want there to be a level of strategy involved when handling different types of enemies. Even though this portion of the game wasn’t shown I am confident that it will turn out stellar in the end.

Now let’s talk about boss battles. The tragic reality is that for years boss battles have been slowly starting to vanish, most games don’t need nor want the enemy type and so they have become less a staple of games and more of an add on. Bulletstorm on the other hand hopes to make its boss battles some of the best parts of the game, and we were treated to a enormous Venus flytrap looking beast that had entrenched itself into a massive room, I don’t want to ruin what happens next, but let’s say things get messy.

This game isn’t hard to look at either. The world is this wonderful combination of a crumbling buildings being slowly overrun by what can only be described as overly aggressive plants, something like the rude cousins of the plant from Little Shop of Horrors. Thankfully the violence has a very comic style to it, and you won’t be losing your lunch if you throw someone into a spike or turn him and his closest friend to flaming giblets.

While Bullestorm doesn’t appear to be a game that will tell a deep and moving narrative it does look like a wild action pack ball of fun, one that allows you sick and twisted people to express your darkest ideas in visceral fashion.
